Dynamics of Amazing Teams Case study

teamwork challenge

We are going through an unprecedented period of change in the workforce right now. AI, for better or for worse, is disrupting Business As Usual (BAU); we are in a recession and there are more and more workforce restructures than in any time in our modern history.

"In the year to November, demand for restructuring and redundancy support has increased by nearly 50 percent as businesses responded to the economic slowdown," [Alan McDonald, Head of Advocacy, Employers and Manufacturers Association. Nov 2023]

Nobody is guaranteed a job, many people are on edge of secretly anxious about what the future looks like for them; the cost of living is sky rocketing and all of this combined creates a spiral of negative emotions at work and even at home. We are not in a good place. Forgive the doom and gloom but it is important that we face facts in order to come up with solutions to address them.

Our solution to this at Let Me Out is a confidence building, short, sharp workshop session that does many things:

  • Builds trust and understanding between team members, many of whom are new to each other
  • Gets teams to self reflect on what role they play in a team based on different circumstances and situations
  • Encourages individuals to practice new teamwork and leadership styles for the greater good of the team
  • Some people have a preconceived idea of what their strength is when they're working in a team. It might be because of recent roles they have found themselves in and styles that they have adopted within other organisations that are heavily influenced by the culture of that business.

What we find is that through workshop practice and awareness those people learn that their dominant leadership style doesn't always have to be their default style and that when they stand back and reflect on the needs of the team first, they are capable and willing to take on other roles within the team that are no less effective or less important. In fact, once they understand how all team players contribute in a variety of ways to the success of a team, they can switch between leadership styles easily and everyone benefits from that.

It's also important to set the tone and culture of the team first so that people feel confident, safe and supported when they try new ways of working. Without this foundation they won't ever have the courage to try.

One of the other elements that comes through in this workshop, like many that we run in this day and age, is individual confidence. Being on edge and under stress rarely brings out the best in people. Although some would argue that they need pressure to inspire them to be their best, there is a vast difference between drive, motivation and stress. The former two can help us get into action the latter is physically damaging to our minds and bodies.

We share techniques to re-calibrate the mind for balance and performance. And we also touch on the art of manifestation and how that can play an important role in our lives and our sense of achievement and happiness.

The best location for this type of workshop is not the office. Where possible, we encourage people to gather in a new, inspiring and quality venue where they can bounce off the energy that those spaces provide for an extra environmental boost. At Let Me Out we work with partner venues across New Zealand and often arrange the venue as part of the package delivery.

    KEY OBSERVATIONS AND LEARNING

Teamwork is a practice. When we do it for the first time in a new team, it can feel awkward. When we do it regularly, it gets better
Trust and cooperation are critical behaviours to allow everyone to bring their whole self to the team
Leading a team doesn't always mean being the loudest or the one out front
Lots of people are humble to the point of not painting themselves in a leadership light but they make great leaders!
Leadership roles and styles change, depending on the situation
Encouragement can unlock the potential in people around you
One negative team member can distroy the dynamics of the whole team
Finding time for self is just as important as being there for everyone else
We are only limited by our own beliefs and we can change those

    TESTIMONIAL:
"Thank you for the interactive, relevant, wise and practical workshop. You are so thoughtful and we loved learning about the different leadership styles. Your warmth and caring attitude removed all the pressure from the group and that gave us confidence to learn from each other".
